  • 200 ml (3/4 cup) whole milk
  • 100 g (3.5 oz) gruyère cheese, grated
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Butter, for greasing

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven:

    • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Prepare Potatoes:

    • Peel the potatoes and thinly slice them using a mandoline or sharp knife.
  3. Prepare Garlic Cream Mixture:

    • In a saucepan, combine heavy cream, whole milk, minced garlic, salt, and pepper.
    • Heat the mixture over medium heat until it just starts to simmer. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Assemble Gratin:

    • Grease a baking dish generously with butter.
    • Arrange a layer of potato slices in the bottom of the baking dish.
    • Pour some of the garlic cream mixture over the potatoes.
    • Repeat the layers until all potatoes and cream mixture are used, finishing with a layer of cream on top.
  5. Bake:

    • Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes.
  6. Add Cheese:

    • Remove the foil and sprinkle grated gruyère cheese over the top of the gratin.
    • Return the gratin to the oven and bake uncovered for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the potatoes are tender.
  7. Serve:

    • Allow the gratin to cool slightly before serving.
    • Serve warm as a delicious side dish.

Optional:

  • For a golden brown crust, broil the gratin for a few minutes before serving.
  • Garnish with chopped fresh herbs like parsley or thyme for extra flavor.
