Lebanese Falafel Recipe for 4 People

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dried chickpeas
  • 1/2 large onion, roughly chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Vegetable oil for frying

For Serving:

  • Pita bread or flatbread
  • Hummus
  • Tahini sauce
  • Chopped tomatoes
  • Sliced cucumbers
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Pickles
  • Fresh parsley or cilantro for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Chickpeas:
    • Place dried chickpeas in a large bowl and cover with water. Let soak overnight. Drain well before using.
  2. Blend Ingredients:
    • In a food processor, combine soaked chickpeas, onion, garlic, parsley, cilantro, cumin, coriander, cayenne pepper, salt, and baking powder.
    • Pulse until the mixture is finely ground but not pureed.
  3. Form Falafel Patties:
    • Transfer the mixture to a bowl and stir in flour until the mixture holds together.
    • Shape the mixture into small patties, about 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
  4. Fry the Falafel:
    • Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot to 180°C (350°F).
    • Carefully place the falafel patties into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding.
    • Fry until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
    • Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the falafel hot with pita bread or flatbread, hummus, tahini sauce, chopped tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, shredded lettuce, and pickles.
    • Garnish with fresh parsley or cilantro.
