Egyptian Fatta Recipe for 4 People

Ingredients:

  • 500g lamb or beef, cubed
  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • 4 pita breads, toasted or fried
  • 2 cups plain yogurt
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Ground cumin for garnish
  • Chopped nuts (such as almonds or pine nuts) for garnish
  • Olive oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Meat:
    • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
    • Add the cubed meat and cook until browned on all sides. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Cook the Rice:
    • Prepare the rice according to package instructions. Fluff with a fork and set aside.
  3. Prepare the Yogurt Sauce:
    • In a bowl, mix yogurt with minced garlic and vinegar. Season with salt to taste.
  4. Assemble the Fatta:
    • Break the toasted or fried pita bread into bite-sized pieces and spread them evenly on the bottom of a serving dish.
    • Top the bread with a layer of cooked rice.
    • Arrange the cooked meat on top of the rice.
  5. Pour the Yogurt Sauce:
    • Pour the yogurt sauce over the meat and rice, spreading it evenly.
  6. Garnish and Serve:
    • Sprinkle chopped fresh parsley, ground cumin, and chopped nuts over the top.
    • Serve the Fatta immediately while warm.

Optional:

  • You can add a layer of cooked chickpeas between the rice and meat for extra protein and texture.
  • Some variations include adding a layer of fried onions or a drizzle of clarified butter (samneh) over the top.
