Ingredients:

  • 400g (14 oz) lean ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, grated
  • 1/2 cup cabbage, finely shredded
  • 1/2 cup green beans, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato sauce (ketchup)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 8 sheets spring roll pastry
  • Vegetable oil, for deep frying
  • Tomato sauce (ketchup), for serving

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Filling:
    • In a large skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat until browned.
    • Add chopped onion and cook until softened.
    • Stir in grated carrots, shredded cabbage, sliced green beans, and frozen peas.
    • Add Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce, salt, and pepper. Cook for a few minutes until vegetables are tender. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  2. Roll the Chiko Rolls:
    • Lay out a sheet of spring roll pastry on a clean surface.
    • Spoon some of the filling onto one end of the pastry sheet.
    • Fold the sides over the filling and roll up tightly to enclose the filling.
    • Seal the edge with a little water to secure the roll.
    • Repeat with the remaining pastry sheets and filling.
  3. Fry the Chiko Rolls:
    • Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 180°C (350°F).
    • Carefully lower the chiko rolls into the hot oil in batches.
    • Fry for 5-6 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
    • Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  4. Serve:
    • Serve the hot chiko rolls with tomato sauce (ketchup) on the side for dipping.

Optional:

  • You can customize the filling by adding other vegetables like corn, bell peppers, or mushrooms.
  • For a healthier option, you can bake the chiko rolls in the oven instead of frying them.

Enjoy these delicious Australian Chiko Rolls with your family and friends!
