Australian Meat Pie Recipe for 4 People

Ingredients:

  • 500g (1.1 lbs) ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Vegemite (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 pre-made pie crusts or puff pastry sheets
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Filling:
    • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
    • Add chopped onions and minced garlic. Cook until softened.
    • Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
    • Sprinkle flour over the meat and stir to combine.
  2. Add Stock and Seasoning:
    • Gradually pour in beef stock, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens.
    • Add Worcestershire sauce and Vegemite (if using).
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste. Allow the filling to simmer for a few more minutes until it reaches a thick consistency.
  3. Prepare the Pie Crust:
    • Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
    • Roll out the pre-made pie crusts or puff pastry sheets and line your pie dishes with them. Trim off any excess pastry.
  4. Fill the Pies:
    • Spoon the meat filling evenly into each pastry-lined pie dish.
  5. Top the Pies:
    • Cover each pie with another layer of pastry or puff pastry. Crimp the edges to seal the pies and create a decorative pattern if desired.
    • Brush the top of each pie with beaten egg to give them a golden finish.
  6. Bake:
    • Place the pies on a baking tray and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crispy.
  7. Serve:
    • Allow the pies to cool slightly before serving.
