Icelandic Plokkfiskur Recipe for 4 People

Ingredients:

  • 500g (1.1 lbs) cod fillets, or any white fish of your choice
  • 500g (1.1 lbs) potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 500ml (2 cups) milk
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Salt, to taste
  • Chopped parsley, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Potatoes:
    • Place the diced potatoes in a pot of salted water.
    • Bring to a boil and cook until tender, about 10-15 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Fish:
    • In a separate pot, cover the cod fillets with water.
    • Bring to a gentle simmer and poach the fish until it flakes easily with a fork, about 5-7 minutes.
    • Remove the fish from the water, drain, and flake into bite-sized pieces. Set aside.
  3. Make the Sauce:
    • In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
    • Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent.
    • Stir in the flour to form a roux and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  4. Combine Ingredients:
    • Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
    • Cook until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Assemble the Plokkfiskur:
    • Add the cooked potatoes and flaked fish to the skillet with the sauce.
    • Gently stir until everything is well combined and heated through.
  6. Serve:
    • Transfer the Plokkfiskur to serving plates.
    • Garnish with chopped parsley.

Optional:

  • Serve with rye bread and butter for a traditional Icelandic meal.

Enjoy this comforting Icelandic Plokkfiskur with your loved ones!
