Mexican Tamales Recipe for 4 People
Ingredients:
- 2 cups masa harina (corn flour)
- 1 cup warm water or broth
- 1/2 cup lard or vegetable shortening
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup shredded cooked chicken or pork
- 1 cup salsa verde or red enchilada sauce
- 12 dried corn husks, soaked in warm water until pliable
- Optional toppings: sour cream, chopped cilantro, diced onions, sliced jalapeños
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine masa harina, warm water or broth, lard or vegetable shortening, baking powder, and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Assemble the Tamales:
- Spread a thin layer of masa dough onto the center of each soaked corn husk.
- Spoon a tablespoon of shredded meat and a tablespoon of salsa verde or red enchilada sauce onto the masa dough.
- Fold and Steam:
- Fold the sides of the corn husk over the filling to enclose it, then fold the bottom of the husk up.
- Place the tamales upright in a steamer basket or pot, open side up. Add water to the pot, making sure it doesn’t touch the tamales.
- Cover and steam the tamales for about 1 hour, or until the masa dough is cooked through and easily pulls away from the husk.
- Serve:
- Let the tamales cool slightly before unwrapping them.
- Serve warm with your favorite toppings such as sour cream, chopped cilantro, diced onions, and sliced jalapeños.
Optional:
- You can add additional fillings to the tamales such as cheese, beans, or vegetables for variety.
